Hair Dye Instructions - Henna Brown
Instructions for Natural Henna Hair Dye
Henna is a cruelty-free, plant-based hair dye derived from the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant. It naturally imparts rich red tones and is used worldwide as a semi-permanent, chemical-free hair colour option. Follow this step-by-step guide to dye your hair with henna at home.
Step 1: Prepare the Henna Paste
- Mix the henna powder
- In a large, non-metallic bowl, mix henna powder with warm water until it reaches a pancake batter consistency.
- For enhanced dye release, you may add a few teaspoons of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, though this is optional.
- Cover the bowl to minimise air exposure, as oxidation can alter the dye potency. Use plastic wrap, a reusable cover, or an airtight lid.
- Allow the henna paste to sit for 8–12 hours (overnight works best) for maximum dye activation.
- If you're short on time, you can use the paste immediately, though this may result in a slightly less vibrant colour.
Step 2: Apply the Henna
- Prepare for application
- Start with damp or dry hair—whichever makes sectioning easier.
- Wear an old, loose-necked shirt and consider your bra choice, as henna can stain fabric.
- Apply a thin layer of oil (such as coconut oil) along your hairline, ears, and neck to prevent skin staining.
- Section your hair and apply the paste from root to tip, ensuring full coverage.
- Henna has a mud-like texture and can feel heavy, especially on long hair.
- Once applied, twist or bun your hair into a secure and comfortable position for the waiting period.
- Wrap your hair with plastic wrap or a shower cap to keep the henna from drying out.
- Leave the henna on for 90 minutes to 4 hours—some people keep it up to 6 hours, but the colour intensity does not increase significantly beyond 4 hours.
Step 3: Rinse and Maintain Colour
- Rinse thoroughly
- Rinse out the henna with warm water in the shower.
- Use conditioner to help remove any remaining residue. Do not use shampoo yet, as it can strip the henna’s natural conditioning oils.
- Henna-treated hair retains moisture longer, so it may take extra time to fully dry.
- Sleep with a dark towel or pillowcase for the first night to prevent staining.
- Avoid shampooing for 24–48 hours to allow the colour to settle and deepen.
Additional Tips for Best Results
- Henna colour oxidises over time—expect the shade to deepen over the next few days.
- For darker shades, henna can be followed with an indigo application (see separate instructions).
- Reapply every 4–6 weeks to maintain vibrancy, as henna gradually fades over 1–2 months.
- Use a sulfate-free shampoo to prolong the colour and keep your hair healthy.
- Henna blends beautifully with natural red, brown, and auburn tones, creating unique, natural-looking results.
With regular use, henna not only colours but also conditions, strengthens, and enhances shine, making it an excellent natural hair dye choice.
